When you Walk the Wall each step literally saves lives and gives China’s abandoned and disabled children a future.
Each year thousands of babies and children with disabilities are abandoned into China’s state orphanages. Due to lack of resources and care, the majority of these children quickly deteriorate and often die. Although China is experiencing rapid economic growth there is still a deficit in social welfare provision for the disadvantaged, especially the disabled.
For more than fourteen years International China Concern has partnered with the Chinese government to develop social welfare for the abandoned and disabled, to establish care homes, group homes, foster care, therapy and medical intervention programmes, to provide special education, vocational training and a sheltered workshop. Hundreds of lives have been changed but there are many more that desperately need our help.
Walk the Wall is your opportunity to partner with others around the world and make a difference to the lives of China’s abandoned and disabled. We expect 1200 friends of International China Concern to take part in a sponsored 10K walk on September 13 and collectively walk twice the length of the Great Wall of China. Money raised will provide ongoing care for the children and help to fund two key International China Concern projects – Homes for Life and Abandonment Prevention.
Thousands of years ago China’s rulers built a wall to protect their northern borders from invaders. Just like a giant dragon the wall winds 6000K from northwest to northeast, crossing mountains, deserts and grasslands. Some even claim this magnificent feat of engineering can be seen from outer space.

Each year many disabled children face the pain and grief of being abandoned. One of the main reasons for abandonment is the lack of social welfare services and support for families with children with disabilities. Imagine raising a special needs child without assistance – no therapy, no counselling, no respite care, no special education, no medical assistance and no community support.
One of our key goals is abandonment prevention. We long to see the day when parents no longer have to face the painful choice to abandon a longed-for son or daughter. Through our Community Outreach Programme we are supporting families who are caring for a disabled child at home, providing training, therapy and medical care, and financial assistance. Every dollar you raise will help us to build on this. Walk the Wall and help us make abandonment a thing of the past.
